Stay Comfortable During Your Appointment

Anxious About the Dentist?

If you’re nervous about an upcoming dental surgery or you suffer from dental anxiety, Dr. Ben Friberg is here to help. At our office, we offer a comfortable, caring environment to help you stay calm and relaxed throughout your appointment. Learn more about our options below, or contact us to schedule a consultation.

How Can I Manage Dental Anxiety?

Dental anxiety management involves the use of sedatives to help patients feel more comfortable and relaxed throughout dental appointments. Most commonly, it’s used for patients who suffer from dental anxiety. According to available data, somewhere between 9-20% of people have avoided going to the dentist because of dental anxiety. Sedation can help patients who are anxious about dentistry relax during their treatment.

Understanding Common Anxiety Management Options

The two most common types of dental sedation are nitrous oxide sedation (also called “minimal inhaled sedation) and oral conscious sedation.

Nitrous oxide sedation uses a mixture of nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and oxygen, which is pumped into your lungs using a nose mask. You’ll simply breathe in through the mask when instructed to by Dr. Friberg, and the sedative will immediately take effect. You’ll feel “floaty” and disconnected from what’s happening around you. You won’t feel any pain or discomfort. Nitrous oxide sedation wears off after only about 5 minutes, and you can drive yourself home and get back to your day-to-day tasks after treatment.

Oral conscious sedation is a deeper level of sedation. You’ll take a few sedative pills before your appointment. They will make you feel very groggy and calm. You may fall asleep during your procedure, and most patients forget most of what happens while they are sedated. However, you will remain conscious, and will be able to respond to commands. This method of sedation lasts 4-6 hours, so you can’t drive yourself home or go back to work after treatment, and you’ll need to plan accordingly.

Benefits Of Sedation Dentistry

Sedation is a great way to help patients overcome feelings of anxiety or nervousness related to dental treatment, and ensure that they can get the care they need for a healthy mouth.

Sedation dentistry is also often used for patients who are undergoing invasive surgery, or who are receiving multiple dental treatments, like dental implants, in a single appointment. It can help reduce any feelings of pain and discomfort, and ensure that patients feel comfortable sitting in the dentist’s chair for long periods of time.

It has some other benefits, too. Sedation can help with fear of needles, such as the numbing needles that are often used in dental treatments. It also impairs the gag reflex, which is very helpful when operating on patients who have a very strong gag reflex that may otherwise interfere with treatment.

Is Sedation Dentistry Right For You?

At Thrive Family Dental, we can offer sedation for just about any treatment at our office. As long as you are healthy and do not have any medical conditions that may interfere with sedation, you can be sedated during your appointment. This lets you get the care you need without fear or anxiety. To learn more and get started, contact us online or call us at (910) 240-4797 for an appointment.
