What Is A Dental Bridge? How Is It Related To A Crown?

A dental bridge uses two crowns, which are placed on healthy “abutment” teeth, to restore one or more missing teeth. The crowns are permanently placed on two healthy teeth on either side of your missing tooth, and they are used to suspend a false tooth (pontic) in the gap. A dental bridge literally “bridges” the gap where your missing tooth or teeth used to be.

The Dental Bridge Placement Process

The bridge placement process is quite similar to having a crown placed. You’ll come in and your mouth will be numbed, then two of your teeth will be prepared for the bridge, and images and impressions will be made of your teeth. Then, you’ll get temporary crowns to protect your teeth while you wait for your permanent bridge to be created. Dr. Friberg will work closely with a dental lab to create a bridge that will look and feel natural in your mouth.

You may need to come back for several appointments over the next several weeks and try on multiple bridges to ensure that they fit correctly. Once the fit is perfect, your bridge will be bonded into place permanently to restore the aesthetics and function of your smile.
